Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS) and master’s degree in Business Administration from the Open University Business School (UOBS, United Kingdom). Between 1989 and 1999, he was responsible for number of strategic, technical and business areas at IBM. From 2000 to 2004, he was associate director of the IBM-UPC joint research institute. He was also director of the IBM Centre for Advanced Studies in Barcelona. In 2005 he helped found the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and was associate director of the public consortium from its creation until his appointment as General Director for Research. He has been member of a number of European councils and boards on research and development in information and communication technology, focusing especially on European supercomputing strategy. He has been continuously involved with international and national universities and public and private research and development centres throughout his career.
